The City of Green and Green Historical Society invites the community to attend the official ribbon cutting of the rebuilt 1885 historic Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse on Friday, October 1 at 9 a.m.   The historic one-room schoolhouse, located at Boettler Park, 5300 Massillon Road, was destroyed by arson on August 9, 2016. 

The newly restored schoolhouse was completed in 2020 and reopened to the public in 2021. The schoolhouse is now the home of the Green Historical Society, which has transformed the basement of the building into an exhibit space for local artifacts and historic documents.  

The brief ceremony will include remarks from Mayor Gerard Neugebauer and Glenn Witsaman, president of the Green Historical Society, followed by a ribbon cutting, tours and refreshments.  In addition, the Green Historical Society invites all who attend to add their signature to the schoolhouse register, which will be included in a time capsule mounted in the archival room for opening in 2085, the 200^th anniversary of the schoolhouse. 

The schoolhouse will be open to the public on Friday, October 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.  It will also be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 2 during the City’s Twisted Wilderfest, a pop-up makers market, at the adjoining Southgate Park.   Regular visiting hours are posted monthly on the City and Green Historical Society’s websites.
